4th Edition Races Part 1

Race:

As part of this blog I will be reviewing some of the changes (for better or worse) from 3.5 to 4th edition. The first thing I notice is the races and the face lift some have gotten, as well as the introduction of some new ones. It is clear by the title of the Player's Handbook "Arcane, Divine, and Martial Heroes" that wizards of the coast intends for future players handbooks to be released featuring new classes, as well as potentially new races.

The first race feature in the players handbook is one of the new races, the Dragonborn. The Dragonborn are said to be creatures that value honor above any other virtue. They look like half-dragon have men, and appear to be a race meant to be Paladins. With their Strength and Charisma modifiers, the Dragonborn would surely be a powerful force. To further tilt the scales in their favor are their ability to use Dragon style breath weapons. They are very well rounded and a strong combat class race. The picture is a Dragonborn Warlord, straight from the Players handbook.

Next comes an old favorite, the Dwarf. Dwarves are much what you would expect from them. Gone is the old negative modifier system of stats and now, in addition to their constitution bonus, dwarves enjoy a wisdom bonus as well. Further granting them a strong standing in Clerical circles. Other than that, not much has changed for this stout race. Their racial abilities are what you might expect, having to do with unencumbered movement (albeit naturally slow), an iron stomach, and bonuses when they stand their ground. Solid as stone by virtue of heritage and by ability. In addition to Clerics, Dwarves make decent fighters, paladins, and warlords as well.

More to come soon...

Character Creation

Wow the classes and races are very different in 4th edition. What was intended to simplify the game has actually made each class fairly complex. Fortunately, most players start with one character, and can adjust accordingly.

One thing that has come up recently is rolling for stats vs. the point system. Being an old school player, I have always felt that rolling for stats is a good, random, exciting way to make your character. Whereas the point system is like an attempt at simply making everyone the same. I have come to accept the point system to a degree, but certainly don't find the creation process as exciting.

The new races, Dragonborn, Elderin, and Tiefling are all very cool in their own ways. While the old races got a bit of a face lift. The new classes Warlock and Warlord are also interesting variations, and I look forward to future race/class players handbooks. I will review the races soon, followed by the classes.

Life of the Berserker

I know that this is Record of Lodoss War, but Orson rocks... he was the best character with the most depth. Its just a need AMV. Note: I got my Players Handbook today... more posts coming soon!

4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons

Hello and welcome to 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons.

I am one of those old school D&D types who has been playing all manner of Pen and Paper RPGs since the 80s and still love it today. I know there are a lot of us out there, still enjoying the good old fashion role playing aspects that even today's technology just cannot compete with.

This blog will be dedicated to adventures, character building, new races, new classes, and fun ideas about the Dungeons and Dragons multi-verse. But mostly Forgotten Realms. I am a bit behind with my new books, but they are on the way! When I create my first character, I'll post him up!

I'll gladly share the characters and ideas of some of you other D&D guys too. Happy gaming.
